Water-based Experiences
A family holiday is always an adventure and never more so than when there are volcanoes and thrilling water activities on hand.
Take a live geology lesson by exploring the region’s three volcanoes. Start off with a family-friendly jeep tour of Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano, before hopping across to the Aeolian Islands. Vulcano’s constantly smouldering volcano is an easy climb for energetic teenagers, taking around an hour to walk up to the crater rim. Over on Stromboli, don’t miss the ‘fireworks’ produced by its volcano – join a late afternoon guided tour, arriving at the crater at sunset, or an evening boat excursion to see the fireworks from afar.
If you are a family of budding chefs, then you might like to try a family-friendly cooking class. Introduce the children to the joy of using fresh locally-produced ingredients and seafood which is transported directly from the sea to table top within a matter of hours. Learn how to make fresh tagliatelle or iconic ricotta-filled cannoli during a half-day informal cooking lesson, then enjoy a relaxed family meal together.
On the water
If you prefer to be in the water, try canyoning, body rafting and river trekking at Sicily’s Alcantara gorge or explore the waters around the Aeolian islands on a guided family sea kayaking tour. Suitable for beginners, and with double kayaks available for families with young children, the tour winds its way past tiny caves and into sea grottos, leaving plenty of time for refreshing sea dips. Family-friendly holiday
Sicily is one of the Med’s most family-friendly destinations and families are welcomed with open arms at hotels and restaurants. After all, anywhere where breakfasting on two scoops of gelato stuffed inside a doughy brioche is the norm is guaranteed to be a hit with most children. At other times, feast on pane cunzato, traditional Aeolian flat bread piled high with tomatoes, ricotta, aubergine, tuna and capers.
